AGGRESSION and SEXUALITY

The word “aggress” is often used in psychoanalysis to mean “to advance, to approach, to assert one’s individuality.” The adjective “aggressive” is used in psychiatry as the opposite of “passive” and does not imply the concept of “hostility”; therefore, it is not confused with the concept of “violence.” Aggression is considered a positive quality and indicates the ability to “reach out toward objects in the external world,” to relate to others.

Movement is a function of the musculature. Since human males have greater muscular development than females, it can be deduced that the function of movement is more important for them than for women. It is important to reflect on the extroversion of the flow of energy in men and their greater muscular development.

In all mythologies, the male or the masculine principle has represented the spirit in movement, while the female or the feminine principle has been considered the receptacle that transforms this spirit. The feminine functions of receiving, containing, and transforming are necessary in the sexual act itself, just as they are in procreation.

This is not to say that women’s role is passive or inferior. Many women, consciously or unconsciously, reject their sexual nature, believing it imposes a submissive attitude on them. No one wants to feel like an object, sexual or otherwise.

Everyday experience shows us that women are as active as men in initiating sexual relations. They have their own way of expressing their desire for sexual intercourse: a look, a touch, a gesture, rarely words. In a relationship between a man and a woman, it is impossible to determine who initiated the contact. Once it has been established, the man becomes the hunter and the woman the prey, but a prey who has her own ways of making the hunt exciting for him.
